The projects are selected in an open grant process. The Board of Trustees of the Ekopolis Foundation makes the final decision on the supported projects based on the recommendation of the Advisory Board of the program.
NGOs and informal groups of citizens are eligible to apply for the financial support.
Small and middle size towns with app. 7 500 - 50 000 citizens are the program priority. Communities in these target groups are usually big enough to have the right spirit of the town and solidarity. The local economics is usually strong enough to contribute to the project implementation. Of course, it is possible also for smaller or bigger communities to be supported in specific grant rounds as well.
Participation of the local citizens in planning, preparation and implementation of the project belongs to the main criteria of the program. To the other important criteria belong: the evidence of the support/close cooperation with the broader local community, the participation of the architect capable of developing a plan of reconstruction, an agreement of the land owner and selection of the appropriate public space to be renovated. (E.g. it has to be accessible to the public without any barriers.)
